  • Cape Breton University and the Cape Breton University Faculty Association are pleased to jointly announce that a Tentative Collective Agreement has been reached. “We are thrilled to be able to announce that an agreement has been reached today,” says Interim President, Dale Keefe. “We are looking forward to moving past this and working with members of CBUFA and the CBU community to make 2017 a great year at Cape Breton University.” “CBUFA members are pleased to have the bargaining process come to a conclusion and we look forward to being able to concentrate, without distraction, on our teaching, research, and our service to the university and the Cape Breton community”, said CBUFA spokesperson Andrew Reynolds. “We hope that this augurs a new spirit of collegiality and cooperativity between the Board of Governors, the senior management and the university’s faculty.” The agreement is subject to ratification by both the CBU Board of Governors and the CBUFA membership. Both negotiating teams will recommend ratification to their respective parties. Further details will be announced in the coming days. #cbufa #ouruniversity #cbuniversity #capebreton #cblab #cbpoli #nslab #nspoli #nspse #canlab #cdnpse #pse #highered
  • "As a member of the Academic Faculty at Cape Breton University since October 2011, I have had the mandate to conduct #ecological, #oceanographic and #fisheries #research in the marine ecosystems around and within the Island, and to teach Cape Bretoners of all ages about the remarkable #biodiversity and productivity of their coastal and ocean environments. People are now an integral part of marine ecosystems, so in my position of the University Chair in Marine Ecosystem Research, I have worked with a very broad range of community members, institutions, organizations and corporations (more than 27 in all). Monitoring and planning the #remediation of Sydney's harbour during and after #dredging, tracking the fate of the last #salmonsmolts to leave the Island’s great rivers, striving to determine the sustainable yields from previously unexploited invertebrates before they are over-exploited, modelling the potential of the tides to generate carbon-free energy, and developing a report card for the health of the Bras d’Or #Biosphere are all projects that can only accomplished through partnerships between academics and communities. As the Director of the Bras d’Or Institute, it is my job to maintain and advance all of these liaisons with community partners, and to secure external funding to support our collaborative research and training activities (more than $3M to date). I am but one of the seven current #Research Chairs at CBU, all of whom maintain a similar level of community service in their fields of expertise. If the University’s Board of Governors and Administrators continue to strip the institution of faculty and, consequently, programs, this University will cease to be Cape Breton’s university, and revert back its original state." • "As a CBUFA member, I have actively involved myself in #community outreach activities at CBU and beyond. These include leading and volunteering on committees involved with #MallofScience (an annual event for people of all ages, especially school students), #summercamp science activities, and several outreach activities that promote #education. Meanwhile, my research involves #enzymes that have a number of applications in human #health and #nutrition, and #foodindustries which could have an impact in this community. The picture I have posted is that of a #ForeignExchangeStudent from #India under The Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program; I volunteered to supervise him in my #lab for six months as part of his Ph.D. Degree program."
