Matching Your Money with Your Ethics

With special guests:
Peter Chapman
Executive Director, SHARE

Doug Lionais
Associate Professor, Shannon School of Business

Friday, December 3rd
2-4pm
Multi-Purpose Rm B
Cape Breton University

How are investors engaging corporations on issues such as climate change, human rights, and good governance? Should we be concerned about where our pension funds are invested? Is it possible to bring our ethics into our personal money management?  Peter Chapman has been working in the area of responsible investment for the last twenty years. The Shareholders Association for Research and Education (SHARE) helps institutional investors (including university endowments and pension funds) develop responsible investment policies and implementation plans. Peter will talk about the global context of investment, the evolution of responsible investment and options available to individuals and institutions.

Doug Lionais teaches in the MBA in Community Economic Development program at CBU. He is currently chair of New Dawn Enterprises’ board of directors. Doug will talk about CEDIFs as an alternative form of investment that enables people to invest locally. CEDIFs have proven to be particularly useful financing tools for social enterprises as well as providing good financial incentives for investors.

  • Dr. Ian Brodie (Associate Professor, Folklore) will present his sabbatical talk on Wednesday, March 20 from 3:00–4:00pm in CE 313 @cbuniversity. Carrot cake, coffee and tea will be provided. All are welcome! “I am a fan of hilarity”: Possible Directions for Oral-Formulaic Theory and the Study of Stand-Up Comedy. 😄 This talk addresses contemporary studies of oral formulaic theory to begin an exploration on what applicability Parry and Lord’s ideas of “spontaneous composition” could have for the study of stand-up comedy, using a routine from American comedian Paul F. Tompkins @pftompkins that made it to public mediation on four discrete occasions. How is a routine performed more than once: is it repeated, remembered or recreated? In a performance genre that is predicated in part on the surfeit of spontaneity, I consider the crystallization of certain mots justes as “hooks on which to hang a narrative in the teller’s memory” (Siikala 1990). #CBUFA #cbufaresearch #CapeBretonUniversity #CBU #capebreton #novascotia #nspse #cdnpse #pse #highered #education #community #teaching #research #service #students #faculty #librarians #labinstructors #archivists #researchchairs #nursingpracticeeducators #unionproud #sabbatical #standupcomedy #folklore
