With special guests:
Peter Chapman
Executive Director, SHARE

Doug Lionais
Associate Professor, Shannon School of Business

Friday, December 3rd
2-4pm
Multi-Purpose Rm B
Cape Breton University

How are investors engaging corporations on issues such as climate change, human rights, and good governance? Should we be concerned about where our pension funds are invested? Is it possible to bring our ethics into our personal money management?  Peter Chapman has been working in the area of responsible investment for the last twenty years. The Shareholders Association for Research and Education (SHARE) helps institutional investors (including university endowments and pension funds) develop responsible investment policies and implementation plans. Peter will talk about the global context of investment, the evolution of responsible investment and options available to individuals and institutions.

Doug Lionais teaches in the MBA in Community Economic Development program at CBU. He is currently chair of New Dawn Enterprises’ board of directors. Doug will talk about CEDIFs as an alternative form of investment that enables people to invest locally. CEDIFs have proven to be particularly useful financing tools for social enterprises as well as providing good financial incentives for investors.

  • CBUFA celebrates students: Mary Rebecca "Becky" Julian was a student of Lloyd White's when he taught an in-community course in #IndianBrook. Lloyd, together with Velvet Paul from Indian Brook, nominated her for an #Honorary #Doctorate in 2017 after she had become ill and was not able to continue her studies. However her lived experience and #Elder standing, along with her work to preserve Mi'kmaq culture (she continues to work with the youth in Indian Brook), speak volumes about her importance in the #Mikmaq and broader Cape Breton #community. She’s a wonderful woman, incredibly humble and Lloyd says that it was an absolute honour to be in her presence. 📷 @cbuniversity #CBUFAstudents #CBUFA #CapeBretonUniversity #CBU #ouruniversity #capebreton #novascotia #nspse #cdnpse #pse #highered #education #community #teaching #research #service #students #faculty #labinstructors #archivists #nursingpracticeeducators #researchchairs
  • CBUFA celebrates students: Jillian Ellsworth left…and then came back! This Honours #English graduate went to King’s College @ukchalifax to complete the one-year #journalism program 📝 and was thrilled to end up back at CBU, now working in the Marketing and Communications #MARCOMM department. “Essentially, I now get to write for CBU.” Jill’s passion for reading and writing found a nurturing environment at CBU, and she fondly remembers taking #Modern #AmericanLiterature – “it was the best reading list ever!” – and loved the engaging conversations she had in the seminar. Also a #freelance #writer, Jill has a regular column in the @capebretonpost #CapeBretonPost 🗞#CBUFAstudents #CBUFA #CapeBretonUniversity #CBU #ouruniversity #capebreton #novascotia #nspse #cdnpse #pse #highered #education #community #teaching #research #service #students #faculty #labinstructors #archivists #nursingpracticeeducators #researchchairs
  • CBUFA celebrates students: In February, 13 students from the Shannon School of Business #SSOB traveled to #Jamaica with Dr. Leslie Wardley @cbuniversity and Dr. Natalya Brown @nipissingu to work on consulting with the #FernForestEcoVillage. The Fern Forest Eco-Village is a fledgling #ecotourism business with a #community based charitable aspect located several kilometers outside of #OchoRios, Jamaica in the #GreatFernGully. Fern Forest Eco Village worked with students on two major projects. First, students explored ways to increase economic participation from the community using #beekeeping. Second, students explored #ForestBathing, which is a rapidly growing activity regarded as #alternativemedicine and #preventivehealth care in places like Japan, China, North America (Canada), and Europe (Germany). This experience allowed students to engage in #appliedresearch in which they visited the potential development site and could envision the future operations of Fern Forest Eco Village. This #expedition not only had benefits for the students but also for Fern Forest Eco Village as it helped them explore feasible business operations, but also has broader impact on the #FernGully community as a #poverty reduction strategy. #CBUFAstudents #CBUFA #CapeBretonUniversity #CBU #ouruniversity #capebreton #novascotia #nspse #cdnpse #pse #highered #education #community #teaching #research #service
