  • Today is William Davis Miners’ Memorial Day #davisday #minersmemorialday Every June 11th those who live in Nova Scotia’s former coal company towns gather to remember miners who died in major accidents in the mines. In recent years, the ceremony has become an opportunity to reflect more broadly on our coal mining heritage, the hardships and sacrifice, the bravery and achievements of Nova Scotia’s coal miners. We remember all of this on June 11th by focusing on one of the darkest days in Nova Scotia coal mining history. On that day in 1925, striking coal miners in Cape Breton, pushed to desperation because the coal company had cut off their access to water and electricity, after stopping their primary access to food from company stores, marched to the company’s power facilities outside New Waterford, in an attempt to restore power and water. Estimates number the crowd of marchers anywhere from 700 to 3,000. When they reached their destination, the company police began firing at the unarmed miners, killing 37-year old William Davis, and wounding others. William Davis and his wife had 9 children and a 10th on the way. He was a skilled worker, active in his union, and had worked previously in Springhill. His older brother Thomas had died at the age of 14 in the Springhill disaster of 1891. Davis was given the largest funeral the Town of New Waterford had ever seen. His death became a symbol of the determination and resilience of the miners in their struggles. At a union convention later that year June 11th was declared Davis Day. Miners vowed they would never work on June 11th and for many years this was the case. Parades, union speeches, and memorials filled the day. We continue to commemorate Davis Day so we never forget how fierce the struggle became for basic human and labour rights for Nova Scotia’s coal miners and their families. #coalminers #coalmining #labourrights #nsmuseumofindustry #nslab #novascotia #capebreton #standthegaff #standingthegaff
  • On Friday 24 May, at the ANSUT General Meeting, members received and were presented with the CAUT Dedicated Service Awards for their work with ANSUT and their local associations. The honourees included: Robert Farmer (#MSVUFA), Rudi Meyer (#FUNSCAD), Peter McInnis (#StFXAUT), and Scott Stewart (#CBUFA). Scott’s contribution to the union has and continues to be significant. His service to the faculty association goes beyond our first collective agreement. Most recently he has served as Chair of the Communications Committee from July 1 2018 to June 30 2019. Served in the capacity of Past-President from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018. Served as union President from July 2013 to June 30, 2016. During his tenure as President he represented the interests of the association at the board and made significant contributions in preventing potential layoffs prior to the end of his term. Scott also played a significant role in bringing a labor complaint to the NS Labor Board. The employer attempted to negotiate a retirement incentive directly with our members, violating our right to be the sole bargaining agent for our members. The union was successful in this case thus protecting our rights. Scott has also served as Chief Grievance Officer and as Treasurer/Secretary. Most notably he served on the negotiation team that successfully negotiated our first collective agreement. His contributions to ANSUT are also significant. His work on behalf of ANSUT for promoting indigenization and on promoting more transparent and fair funding for Post Secondary Education has been noticed. Scott has often professed to be the most unpopular person in the room. This is a colourful way of saying that he publicly shares his opinion and speaks the truth regardless if it is popular or not. This is a necessary skill of any Faculty Association President and CBUFA has been served well by Scott’s leadership.
