A graduate of Cape Breton University (BA) and University of New Brunswick @discoverunb (MA), Dr. MacKinnon completed his PhD at Concordia University @concordiauniversity in 2016. His dissertation, which examined the #deindustrialization of Cape Breton Island, earned Concordia University's Governor General Academic Gold Medal. More recently, Dr. MacKinnon was a SSHRC-funded post-doctoral fellow with the Gorsebrook Research Institute at Saint Mary’s University @smuhalifax, where he studied the history of #capitalism. The author/editor of numerous scholarly publications, including the highly-acclaimed book The Deindustrialized World: Confronting Ruination in Postindustrial Places (UBC Press, 2017), MacKinnon brings to the Department
